According to research, some sugar-free gum can acidic additives, usually taste the fruit, which can attack the enamel and cause a high risk of tooth decay, the Daily Express reports.
"The term free sugars can indeed be deceiving because people automatically believe the product is safe for teeth. People must be educated about these hidden risks," said study leader Dr. Sok-Ja Janket from Boston University.
However, research also shows that chewing sugar-free gum after meals can reduce the risk of tooth decay by about 40 percent, particularly about 20 minutes after eating. This is when plaque acid attacks usually occur. This study has been published in the British Dental Journal in October 2011. (Mediaindonesia.com)
